Taking a break from romance...
Although reading romance is my first love, every now and then I stray a wee bit. Back in January I did an interview with APOOO Bookclub and one of the questions pertained to my reading goal(s) for 2009.
Last summer I came across this wonderful used bookstore in Olde City Philadelphia. And what treasures did I find! I found copies of Quicksand and Passing by Nella Larsen, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs and Dust Tracks on a Road by Zora Neale Hurston.I had the pleasure of reading Jacob's story for the second time last year as well as Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God.
Getting back to my reading goal(s) for 2009. One of my goals was to read novels by female writers from the Harlem Renaissance. Today I started Quicksand by Nella Larsen. I'm totally looking forward to reading the thoughts and feelings of women from that era. I'm curious to know how or if our beliefs have changed.
What about you my fellow romance readers? Have you taken a break from romance? Please share with us what else interest you besides romance.

I NEVER take a break from romance, I thrive and dwell in it therefore, its in the fabric of who I am BUT I do read other books too. Ironically, I just acquires Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl also and it is on my near future reading list. I read Eric Jerome Dickey's Gideon trilogy and Plearure during December and January. I also have two Heather Graham mysteries that are on my near future list. Thanks for hte list, I already own two others and am going to check out the remaining.

Hey Rhea,
Thanks for stopping buy. LOL...trust me, my break from romance will be a very short one! I can't wait for you to read Incidents in the Life of Slave Girl. Let's talk about it after you read it. I've read a couple of Dickey's books. I like his stuff, too.

Hi Victoria,
I enjoyed meeting you at Slam Jam 2008 and I love your books! I never break from romance, but Zora Neale Hurston is one of my favorite literary figures! My absolute favorite book is Chinua’s Achebe’s, “Things Fall Apart.”
Take care!

Hey Nett!
I see you're a die hard romance reader, too! I just did a quick search on Things Fall Apart, sounds interesting. I'm going to add it to my TBR list for when I take another quick break.
I'm glad you enjoyed my books! RSJ has selected When Love Comes Around for book of the month. Please join us on Black Romance group on Shelfari in early April to discuss Starr and Kevin's story! Will you be attending RSJ Cruise 2010? Hope to see you there! Thanks for checking out my blog. I really appreciate it!

Hi Victoria,
No, I haven't taken a break from romance. However, I love reading true crime stories, even though I haven't done it for awhile. My favorites are "The Preppy Murder Trial" and "For the Color of His Skin: The Murder of Yusuf Hawkins and Trial of Bensonhurst."
Perhaps I need to set a reading goal. Thanks.

Hi Rekaya,
I love watching true crime shows on cable. I can't remember the title, but years ago I read a true story about a nurse who worked on a pediatric unit in a hospital and was killing the babies! It was pretty disturbing. Anywho, thanks for swinging by!
